Ceramic beads, interview with ceramic bead artist Gaea

Ceramic beads by Gaea

After a holiday break the monthly interviews with bead artists will continue, starting this month. I’m thrilled and exited that ceramic bead artist Gaea agreed to do the interview for this month.
Gaea is well known for her ceramic beads and pendants. Her work has been published in numerous bead magazines. I love her beads. They are always fun and original and colorful. Gaea will tell us a bit more about her work.

Interview

Q: Can you tell us a bit of  the beginning of your career as a ceramic bead artist.

A: Thank you for inviting me to do this interview, Janine! It all started with a ceramics class in collage. You were only allowed to take it four times so many of us would not pass that fourth time so we could take it again. This is how addictive clay work is. It also taught the basics as well as safety practices and glaze chemistry. I wish I remembered more about the glaze chemistry! I also have a love of jewelry which I blame on my mom, and at the holidays I would make jewelry as gifts for friends and family. One year I wanted the jewelry elements to be a bit more personal, so I broke out our stash of polymer clay and baked up some pendants and charms. My husband saw this and said, “You know, you could make those out of ceramic.” This was in 1999. We spent the next weekend experimenting and playing. Those first pendants looked awful but at the same time it was divine! This was about the time my job as an art director for a magazine was in jeopardy due to lay offs. I had been working from home so I could care for our newborn son. It seemed like a good time to jump into jewelry design and beads full time. I would take my beads to color match at the bead shops and the owner would ask where the pendants came from. It was nice to say “ME!”

Q:  Next to working with ceramic, you also work with copper. Are you planning to explore other materials as well in the future, like polymer clay or glass?

A: Always exploring new materials! You can find the most unlikely materials in the most unlikely places. Always keep your eyes open! I still play with polymer clay. The kids love this too for it's almost instant gratification. My daughter has been making gift necklaces for friends out of sculpey. She LOVES it!

Q: What inspires you in your work?

A: Just about everything. If you have your mind set to that frequency, you just begin to see things for their potential in your designs. Color, texture, shape. Stories. Music. It can all be potential inspiration. I love to go out hiking for color inspiration and in spite of our lack of season in Southern California, we have a bit of change in spring and fall, I find beautiful color combinations. It's nice to see what mother nature has on display and be inspired by that.

Q: What does a typical day in the life of Gaea looks like?

A: My days revolve around the kids and work. I can take my kids to basketball or soccer or acting class and bring a tray clay to make beads. I've been seen glazing out in public too! People love to chat and ask what I'm doing. I've made some lovely friends this way. Most days are about getting the kids to school and getting out for a hike first thing before it gets hot out. It's always nice when a friend can join me. Conversation with a good friend is always good for getting the creative juices flowing. Getting housework done is not always at the top of my list, so I try to get a bit done in the morning. This way my work space (the kitchen table) is clear to get creative. I fire up the kiln twice a month and it's a big kiln so I try to get it completely full. I don't like wasting space or energy. I'll make beads for part of the day, but like today, there are submission deadlines coming up so I'll pull out some beads and get a few designs made. It's the best form of free advertising and the magazines are always looking for new people and new designs. I tend to be a night owl and stay up way too late. This is a bad habit I am trying to break.

Q: Is there a particular bead and/or jewelry artist you admire or who you consider a role model?

A: There are many! There were only a handful of designers that I saw in the beginning. I remember Melanie Brooks reaching out to me over 13 years ago. We've had some lovely conversations about art beads and business. Diane Hawkey is a fantastic artist, such heartfelt work. Nancy Adams has a really great eye for design and color. Watching designers like Lorelei Eurto, Martha Thomas, Lori Anderson, and Loralee Kolton, (I know I am forgetting so many lovely designers and I am afraid to hurt anyone by not mention their name, but just to name a few: Cherrie Fick! Rebecca Gilbert Johnson! Malin de Koning! Janine Lucas!) make magic from various design elements is a wonder to see! I love seeing what they will come up with. So many amazing design voices out there!

Q: Your work has been published in a lot of  bead magazines, and it is well know and used by many jewelry artists. Do you have a next goal you want to accomplish?

A: I am always thinking about the next design. I have a deep love of photography. I have a few ideas that would be fun books, but I never seem to find the time. I'll keep journaling my ideas and maybe one day they will come to fruition.

Q: If you were not a bead artist, what would you be doing?

A: Painting or drawing. Something creative for sure. Maybe combining a few more of my passions! I've wanted to learn metal smithing for as long as I can remember! That would be a hoot!

Q: Do you have a life motto and if so, would you like to share this with us?

A: Never give up! That and “Don't tell me what to do!” I am pretty stubborn!

Q: Do you have tips, tricks or advise you like to share with us?

A: Do what you love. Everyday even if you can only fit in 10 minutes of what ever that is into your day. Make room for your passions. Keep paper and pencil handy for ideas. I always use my phone for taking notes or capturing ideas with the camera. Send yourself an email so you don't forget that cool idea you had. I also set up reminder alarms for things during the day. I tend to get distracted by the little things, so I set up reminders to drink water of all things, because I will forget and get miserably dehydrated! You can set up reminders to be creative too.

love Gaea

It was wonderful to see my name mentioned (I am so not worthy!). With Gaea, lately I've been hoarding her beads, stashing them for a huge week of designing. I had to stop looking at her Facebook and web site because I was seriously having conniptions over the sets....I want them all!

It was wonderful to hear about how you do your work. And I thought it was hilarious about failing the class so you could take it again!!!!

Big Fan of both YOU and GAEA!! :)

Janine, I'm a big fan of yours and Gaea's (I bought a necklace from Gaea long time ago and I'm amazed by it again and again everytime I put it on... And get many compliments for it!!).
I liked both your Etsy shops and Facebook pages long ago lol, and now subscribed to your Newsletter as well ;) I am now going to share this give-away on my FB page and I'll check all the other options to promote Gaea, you and this wonderful interview. Great work Janine, great work Gaea!
Oh and thank you for the give-away opportunity. It is a great way to share work, and no matter who wins, I will be following (and admiring for sure!) your and Gaea's work for ever...
Have a wonderful day.
